Harris County Jail’s First Inmate Death Of 2026 Hits Already Embattled
A 55-year-old man died after suffering a medical emergency inside the Harris County Jail on Wednesday, according to the sheriff’s office. He was transported to St. Joseph Medical Center in downtown Houston and pronounced dead shortly after arrival. It is the first in-custody death the sheriff’s office has reported so far in 2026 and comes on the heels of a deeply troubled year for the county jail.
